01

Start with the legislation

Electrical equipment, machinery, toys, PPE, cosmetics, medical devices, food, chemicals and other groups follow different EU rules, sometimes more than one. Build the technical file around intended use and risk, not the marketing label.

02

When CE marking applies

CE is not a universal quality mark. Use it only where harmonisation legislation requires it and after conformity assessment and the EU declaration of conformity. Higher-risk products may need a notified body; others permit manufacturer assessment.

03

Manufacturer, importer and representative

A non-EU manufacturer keeps its obligations, while the French importer checks conformity, name/address, traceability and document access. Some groups require an EU responsible person or authorised representative. Marketplace selling does not remove these roles.

04

French information and labelling

Warnings, instructions and mandatory information needed for safe consumer use must be understandable in French. Ingredients, allergens, energy labels, units, manufacturer/importer, batch or serial data and recycling marks vary by product.

05

Packaging and producer responsibility

Many product and packaging streams in France fall under extended producer responsibility. Registration, a unique identifier, eco-contributions, Triman and sorting information may apply by category. A customs broker does not automatically assume these environmental duties.

06

Market surveillance and recalls

Authorities can test products after sale, request evidence and order correction, withdrawal or recall. Complaint, incident, serial, supplier and customer records must remain accessible. Delayed reporting increases financial and reputational exposure.
