French university admissions 2026-27: the right application route

A USEFUL STARTING POINT

Find the guide you need first

Choose the dossier that answers your next question. Background and the complete directory are just below.

UNDERSTAND BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

Build an application, not just a shortlist

Degree, entry level, teaching language and application route come before rankings. Admission and a visa are separate checks.

Find the correct route

Identify the exact programme and entry year. Confirm with the institution whether you apply through a platform, an international process or directly. A nearby programme's deadline is not yours. Prepare translations and language evidence from the actual checklist, not a generic admissions list.

Make the stay workable

Add accommodation, transport, cover and living costs to tuition. An advertised scholarship is not secured funding. Confirm eligibility, timing and combination rules with the provider, and keep a fallback if housing or visa decisions arrive later than expected.

From programme choice to a workable move

Before opening an application, separate the intended level within a degree from the academic intake year. Nationality, residence and previous qualifications can change the application route; admission alone does not settle the visa or housing. The Campus France guide orders those questions, then the housing guide helps prepare evidence and a budget without assuming benefits. For a child at school, consult the phone-use dossier separately: school level, medical need and the institution’s written rules remain important. A university applicant and a lycée pupil do not follow one shared procedure.
