A USEFUL STARTING POINT

Find the guide you need first

Choose the dossier that answers your next question. Background and the complete directory are just below.

UNDERSTAND BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

A story, its evidence and its surviving traces

A timeline provides orientation; documents and places help explain change rather than just memorising dates.

Put an event in its own context

Ask who created a source, when and for whom. A witness account, official text and historian's interpretation offer different perspectives. Connect political events with social change and geography without assuming that every historical France matches today's borders.

Read history in a place

Before visiting, choose a question: royal power, revolution, war or everyday life. Identify what is original, restored or reconstructed. Digitised collections extend the visit and let you compare a narrative with documents rather than treating a monument as the only evidence.

From a declared principle to its implementation

Read the Revolution by separating an event, the text adopted and the people actually included. A change of assembly or constitution does not instantly transform every right or living condition. Follow the revolutionary dossier, then return to contemporary institutions and social definitions. That comparison helps frame questions; it does not make every current rule a direct consequence of 1789. With an image or monument, identify when it was made and what it commemorates. Evidence of an event and the later memory of that event are different things.
