Most asked questions

Should you take the day or night train from Paris to Nice?

The daytime TGV prioritises speed and connections; a scheduled overnight Intercités can save a hotel night. Compare berth type, arrival and onward travel.

01

Day TGV or overnight Intercités

The daytime TGV leaves Paris Gare de Lyon for the Mediterranean; the overnight train, when scheduled, trades a hotel night for a morning arrival. Compare duration, the actual sleeping product, arrival time, luggage and whether accommodation will admit you.

02

Direct or connecting

Some services are direct and others change at Marseille, Toulon or elsewhere depending on the day. Do not compare total duration alone: inspect station, connection time, platform change and ticket protection. With several bags, a slightly longer direct service may be better.

03

The coastal section

After Marseille and Toulon, the route can offer coastal views, but side and train formation never guarantee a continuous panorama. Keep baggage stored and do not block vestibules for photographs. The view is a benefit, not a reason to choose a fragile connection.

04

Arriving at Nice-Ville

Nice-Ville is the central station for the city, tram and coastal trains. Nice-Saint-Augustin better serves the airport for some regional journeys, but a Paris TGV may terminate at Nice-Ville. Read the exact station before arranging a hotel, taxi or connection to Cannes, Monaco or Menton.

05

Riviera connections

Coastal TER trains link Cannes, Antibes, Nice, Monaco and Menton, but frequencies and engineering work change. Check the last return, especially after a concert, match or festival. For a flight, do not build a tight TER-to-terminal connection; add walking, tram and security.

06

Book for the actual trip

Summer, Cannes or Monaco events and weekends raise fares and load factors. Compare a direct train, sleeper, flight and door-to-door time. If continuing to a smaller town, the best ticket is often the one protecting the connection rather than the fastest TGV.
