01

A national stage, not only a Paris stage

The Culture Ministry lists 4 national theatres, 38 national drama centres, 13 national street-arts centres, 14 national circus hubs, 7 national puppetry centres, 77 national stages and more than 100 conventioned stages. These names do not describe one legal status: some are public institutions, others labels or networks, and others private producers or venues. To choose an event, identify the discipline, company, exact venue, language, running time and recommended age instead of relying on the prestige of a name or an old review.

02

Comédie-Française, repertoire and new work

The Comédie-Française maintains a permanent troupe and alternates repertory, new productions and contemporary work across several spaces. Its association with Molière does not mean the entire season is devoted to him. The same play may change cast, room or schedule. Use the official performance page for dates, creative team, running time, possible surtitles, seating and accessibility; a published script and the production currently on stage are related but different experiences.

03

Avignon: the Festival and Off are not one programme

In July, Avignon becomes a temporary capital of live performance. Festival d’Avignon publishes its own programme, venues and ticketing, while Avignon Festival & Compagnies coordinates the Off festival and its separate catalogue. The two programmes are distinct. Before booking, confirm the organiser, address, walking time, heat plan, queue, ticket collection and final admission. Three distant shows on one day can be unrealistic when streets, courtyards and transport are under heavy festival pressure.

04

Dance, circus, puppetry and hybrid forms

The stage extends beyond spoken theatre and opera. Classical and contemporary dance, contemporary circus, puppetry, street arts, performance, music theatre and digital forms have specialist venues, schools and networks. The Centre national de la danse documents creation, heritage and practice; the national circus centre and ARTCENA guide their respective fields. Read notices about lighting, sound, nudity, smoke, audience participation or standing arrangements when these materially shape comfort, safety or whether the work is suitable for a particular visitor.

05

Find the right performance in a French city

Begin with the national stage, drama centre, opera house, municipal theatre or festival serving the area, then compare calendars by date. Programmes commonly operate by season, subscription, sales opening or school booking rather than as a permanent catalogue. Search for touring companies and regional festivals too. An older review may describe a different cast; the venue’s current page remains authoritative for start time, room, language version, price and admission conditions.

06

Book with the price, seat and access in view

Check final price, seating category, sightline, surtitles, discount, proof required and exchange terms before paying. Restricted-view, standing, unreserved and numbered tickets do not work in the same way. Many venues refuse or delay late admission after the curtain rises, so the show time is not the arrival time. Contact the accessibility team about wheelchair space, transfer, audio description, hearing loop, sign language, adapted surtitles or relaxed performances because facilities and accessible dates vary by production.

07

Attend as a family or for the first time

A recommended age reflects attention span, length or content; it does not replace the venue’s minimum-admission rule. For a first visit, choose a known duration, practical time, clear seat and an accessible introduction to the work. Workshops, tours, talks, open rehearsals and learning packs can prepare an audience without revealing the full production. A family-labelled show is not automatically suitable for very young children, so confirm minimum age, pushchair storage, cloakroom, temporary exit and readmission rules.

08

Create, produce and tour a performance

A project separates writing, rights, residency, production, co-production, rehearsal, employment, touring and technical presentation. The Culture Ministry, regional cultural directorates, local authorities, dance and circus centres, ARTCENA and Onda have different missions; appearing in a directory does not make every body a funder. Before applying, verify applicant type, territory, timetable, eligible costs and partners. Contracts, authors’ rights, safety, social declarations and live-entertainment entrepreneur licensing must be checked through the relevant official route.

FRA9 · FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do Festival d’Avignon and the Off share one ticket system?

No. They are distinct programmes with their own organisers, catalogues and booking channels.

Does the Comédie-Française perform only Molière?

No. Its troupe alternates repertory, new productions and contemporary work.

Can a visitor enter after a performance begins?

It depends on the venue and production; entry may be refused or delayed until a break. Check the event page and arrive early.

How should an accessible seat be booked?

Contact the venue’s accessibility team before buying because spaces, equipment and adapted dates vary by production.

Where can production support be checked?

First identify the discipline, territory, applicant and project phase, then consult the Culture Ministry, regional directorate, local authority or relevant sector body.
