A service economy, but not only
Services dominate output and employment, from retail, health and education to finance, digital activity and tourism. France also retains major industrial strengths in aerospace, luxury, pharmaceuticals, energy, food and transport.
Core strengths
A large domestic market, dense infrastructure, skilled labour, global companies and strong tourism support the economy. Paris concentrates decision-making, while Toulouse, Lyon, Grenoble, Nantes, Bordeaux and other cities have powerful specialisms.

Farming, food and regions
France remains a major European agricultural producer. Grains, livestock, wine, dairy and protected-origin foods shape both landscapes and exports. Climate, water and farm incomes are major challenges.
Energy and transition
Nuclear power has an unusual place in French electricity. Renewables, building renovation, mobility and lower-carbon reindustrialisation are central to the current transition.
What to watch in 2026
Growth, inflation, employment, investment and purchasing power can change quickly. FRA9 dates indicators and relies on INSEE so a temporary snapshot is not presented as permanent truth.
