Prix Goncourt 2026: the quick answer

The first selection announced on 2 September 2026 contained 16 novels. The Académie Goncourt withdrew Thélyson Orélien’s C’était ça ou mourir in its 25 September communiqué. Use the 16 entries below as a historical record of that announcement, then consult the Académie’s dated notices for later lists. The 6 October checkpoint has passed. The calendar schedules four finalists on 27 October and the winner on 3 November at Drouant. Sources checked on 18 October 2026.

02

The first eight novels on the list

The first half comprises Boris Bergmann, Minotaure (Albin Michel); Louise Chennevière, Faire la peau (P.O.L); Ananda Devi, Chronique d’un royaume perdu (Grasset); Sonia Devillers, Le fabuleux piano (Robert Laffont); Anne Godard, Nous aussi (Actes Sud); Olivier Grondeau, Joseph dans la nuit (L’Iconoclaste); Yannick Haenel, La solitude des professeurs est infinie (Gallimard); and Lilia Hassaine, JE (Gallimard).

03

The other eight novels in the original announcement

The original announcement continued with Philippe Jaenada, L’inconnue du quai de Javel (Flammarion); Jean-Yves Jouannais, Une forêt (Albin Michel); Emma Marsantes, N’efface pas mes cercles (Verdier); Clémentine Mélois, Choses que je croyais perdues (L’Arbalète/Gallimard); Thélyson Orélien, C’était ça ou mourir (Grasset); Sylvain Prudhomme, De l’autre côté du lac (Les Éditions de Minuit); Olivier Rolin, La guerre éternelle (Gallimard); and Patrice Trigano, Bataille au procès (Maurice Nadeau). Orélien’s entry remains as a historical record, with its 25 September withdrawal noted above.

04

The main-prize calendar: history and forthcoming stages

2 September is the original announcement date. The second selection was scheduled for Tuesday 6 October; it is no longer a forthcoming checkpoint. The Académie’s calendar schedules four finalists on Tuesday 27 October, followed by the proclamation on Tuesday 3 November 2026. To follow a book, check the date of the list on which it appears: the first selection, a finalist place and an award are different stages. Use the dated official announcements to follow that progression.

05

How a novel enters the race

For 2026, the Académie requires a novel written in French and published by a French-language publisher with bookshop distribution. Translations and self-published books are not eligible. Publishers had to send the work to every juror before 2 September, and it had to be on bookshop shelves during the first week of September. After three selections, the final vote is oral, with the majority rule changing over successive rounds.

06

The students’ Goncourt: an updated list, a different jury

The Ministry’s 2 September release announced 16 books for nearly 2,000 students at 56 general, technical and vocational schools, including three French schools abroad. Its follow-up page dated 28 September now lists 15 titles, without C’était ça ou mourir. Author meetings were advertised for 5–15 October in Paris, Nancy, Rennes, Toulouse, Lille, Aix-en-Provence and Lyon. The remaining calendar dates are regional deliberations on 23 November and the national deliberation in Rennes on 26 November. The initial release planned a proclamation at about 13:00; check the organiser’s latest information when planning that day.

07

The prisoners’ Goncourt: 600 readers in 45 institutions

The first list also launches the Prix Goncourt des détenus. France’s National Book Centre expects about 600 readers across 45 prisons. Meetings with authors are planned from 12 October to 13 November, followed by regional deliberations from 23 to 27 November. Ten national delegates meet in Paris on 15 December 2026 to select their winner. That vote is independent of both the main prize and the students’ choice.

08

One starting selection, three possible winners

September’s selection is the starting point, but later list updates and each jury’s result must be read separately. The main Prix Goncourt, the students’ Goncourt and the prisoners’ Goncourt have independent deliberations. The book crowned on 3 November does not automatically become the 26 November or 15 December choice. Before sharing a result or buying a book described as a winner, check the prize’s full name, date and organiser.

09

The next dates that matter

After the now-past 6 October 2026 checkpoint, the next main-prize calendar dates are 27 October for the four finalists and 3 November for the Prix Goncourt proclamation. The other juries’ calendars give 26 November for the students and 15 December for the prisoners. A scheduled date is not a completed result: consult the relevant organiser’s announcement and keep it separate from the historical first list of 16 books.
