Pope Leo XIV in France: dates, route and Paris travel impact
The 25–28 September 2026 official journey connects Paris, Saint-Denis, Lourdes and Metz. Notre-Dame, Île de la Cité, Concorde and several stations will face closures or restrictions.

The France visit: the quick answer
Pope Leo XIV is due to make an official journey to France from Friday 25 to Monday 28 September 2026. The confirmed route links Paris and Saint-Denis on the 25th, Paris and then Lourdes on the 26th, Lourdes on the 27th and Metz on the 28th. For travellers, the most immediate impact is in central Paris, where Notre-Dame, Île de la Cité, Montparnasse, the Latin Quarter, Concorde and the Champs-Élysées will have modified access.
Friday 25 September: Paris and Saint-Denis
Arrival at Orly is scheduled for 10am, followed by the Élysée at 11am and UNESCO at 3pm. A public Popemobile route is announced from 4pm to 5pm between Notre-Dame-des-Champs and Place Saint-Michel via Boulevards Montparnasse and Saint-Michel. The 5.15pm Vespers inside Notre-Dame are invitation-only, while the procession on the forecourt is public. The 17–35 youth vigil at Stade de France starts at 9pm and requires registration.
Saturday 26 September: Concorde outdoor Mass
After two morning meetings, an outdoor Mass is planned for 3pm between Place de la Concorde and the Champs-Élysées. Attendance is free but uses the official registration platform, so free does not mean uncontrolled walk-in access. Departure from Orly for Lourdes is scheduled for 5.45pm. Do not build a normal Louvre–Concorde–Arc de Triomphe sightseeing route for that day: barriers, checks and diversions can make ordinary travel times unrealistic.
Notre-Dame and Île de la Cité closures
Notre-Dame is due to close to the public from 24 to 26 September inclusive, with the towers closed from 24 to 28 September. Île de la Cité will also be subject to restrictions from 24 to 28 September. A normal sightseeing booking or plan should therefore not remain in an itinerary without a fresh check. Move the cathedral and Sainte-Chapelle to another day, or choose a district that does not depend on crossing the island.
Metro, RER and roads: where to build a fallback
Restrictions announced for 25–26 September affect areas including Montparnasse, Vavin, Port-Royal, Luxembourg, La Sorbonne, Odéon, Saint-Michel–Notre-Dame and Cité, followed by Concorde, Champs-Élysées–Clemenceau, Franklin D. Roosevelt, George V, Charles-de-Gaulle–Étoile, Alma–Marceau, Iéna, Kléber and Argentine. This identifies areas to watch, not guaranteed closure hours: consult the official transport plan the evening before and again that morning.
Lourdes: Saturday evening and Sunday 27
The programme gives a 7.05pm arrival at Tarbes–Lourdes–Pyrénées on Saturday, followed by prayer at the Massabielle Grotto at 7.40pm. Sunday includes an 11am Mass on the Sanctuary meadow, afternoon meetings and the 9pm torchlight procession. Pilgrims should separate the official programme, any registration, Sanctuary access, accommodation and transport: a public event does not guarantee a hotel room or rail seat.
Metz: the final stage on Monday 28
The Pope is due to arrive at Metz-Nancy-Lorraine at 9.20am. Two meetings on interfaith dialogue, peace and European unity are scheduled at the Robert Schuman conference centre, followed by a 4pm Mass at Saint Stephen's Cathedral. Departure for Rome is listed at 7pm. If staying in Metz, check perimeters around the conference centre, cathedral and airport links before committing to a tight train connection or timed visit.
The decision checklist before you go
First decide whether you intend to attend, watch the procession or simply sightsee. Register only through the official platform where required and keep the confirmation. Forty-eight hours ahead, check the official visit site, Paris police information and transport operators. On the day, travel light, keep a fallback station and allow a large margin.
