Create the object file
Keep invoice, reference, any number, certificate, dated photographs, dimensions, accessories and service correspondence in a secure file. Maintain a separate digital copy without publishing full numbers. This helps warranty, insurance, repair and resale, though it does not replace physical examination.
Storage by material
Leather, textile, wood, pearl, stone, metal and mechanisms need different conditions. Avoid direct light, heat, extreme humidity and deforming pressure. Do not stuff a bag with colour-transferring paper; separate jewellery; do not leave a damp or magnetised watch unchecked. Follow house instructions for the exact material first.
Care or restoration
Light cleaning, care, repair and restoration are different interventions. Before work, request written diagnosis, replaced parts, timing, cost, service warranty and visual impact. Polishing, recolouring or replacement may improve use while changing original material and collector value. Document before and after.
Warranty and recourse
A brand's commercial warranty and legal guarantees are not the same. Purchase country, seller, new or resale status and defect type may change procedure. Report promptly in writing, keep evidence and timeline, and do not authorise third-party repair before understanding its effect on rights.
Insurance and transport
Check limits, excess, territory, theft away from home, accidental damage, pair or set treatment and appraisal requirements. Home insurance may be insufficient for a significant piece. For shipping use discreet packaging, tracking, declaration and appropriate cover; do not place valuable jewellery or watches in checked baggage without understanding risks and exclusions.
