01

History of the site

Lille had successive municipal belfries, but the Town Hall tower belongs to reconstruction after the destruction of 1914–18. Émile Dubuisson placed the new civic complex in the former Saint-Sauveur quarter; its belfry rose from 1929 to 1932 and reached 104 metres. The modern tower reclaims the symbolic role of a medieval belfry without pretending to be medieval fabric. Listed as a historic monument in 2002, it joined the serial Belfries of Belgium and France property in 2005.

02

Reading the architecture

Red brick, concrete worked to resemble carved stone and a strong vertical line combine Art Deco with neo-Flemish regionalism. At the base Carlo Sarrabezolles carved the giants Lydéric and Phinaert directly into setting concrete, carrying Lille’s founding legend. Although compared with contemporary American skyscrapers, this is not an office slab: it is a civic marker and viewing tower above municipal halls. It has no traditional carillon and should not be confused with the Chamber of Commerce tower near Grand Place.

03

Archives, plans and evidence

Dubuisson’s drawings, structural calculations, Saint-Sauveur planning files, 1929–32 construction photographs and Sarrabezolles records establish the building’s modernity. UNESCO values it not simply for height but because it extends the civic-liberty symbol of the belfry into the twentieth century. Reading the transformed old district also prevents the reconstruction story from erasing the urban fabric displaced by the project.

04

Visitor route

Read town hall and tower as one composition from Place Simon-Vollant, then take the broad view from Porte de Paris. The first 109 steps precede the lift, so official guidance does not describe a fully step-free visit. From the viewing level separate Old Lille, Euralille, traces of fortifications and the mining basin. Check tickets, weather and exceptional closure that morning, then walk to Grand Place and the Old Exchange to connect modern civic power with the older commercial centre.

05

Photographing volume

Begin with a broad view from the arrival axis, then record one construction device and one trace of use. Respect interior restrictions, residents and visitors; a useful image conveys scale, material and the monument’s relationship to the city.

06

Access, tickets and safety

Hours, security, weather, works, ceremonies and events alter access. Check the official site that morning, distinguish public space from paid circuits, buy only through authorised ticketing and allow stable shoes, water and time.

07

Continue the historical route

The three links below extend the story through city or region. Group nearby sites rather than stacking distant monuments; history reads more clearly when defence, civic power, religion, trade and landscape are connected.
