FRA9 · COMPARISON
Choose by use, not noise.
Choose the right use. Verify the right transaction.
Two separate answers: three lines fitted to your use, then a documentary-risk level before a pre-owned purchase.
Your three directions
The score compares your four choices only. It does not rank bags or predict stock, value or authenticity.
Birkin
- Why
- Top handles, generous capacity and top access make this a day-use direction when hands-free carry is not essential.
- Trade-off
- Test loaded weight and closure time: the desired silhouette does not guarantee lightness or instant access.
- Boutique test
- Load phone, glasses, wallet and a small bottle, then walk for ten minutes without switching hands.
Kelly
- Why
- A flap, architectural line and a strap on relevant versions suit a more formal use where closure and shape matter.
- Trade-off
- The flap slows access and the strap varies by exact reference. Check the actual bag, not a generic photograph.
- Boutique test
- Open, retrieve the phone and close it one-handed; then try it over a coat with a real load.
Picotin
- Why
- A bucket shape, hand carry and direct access suit users who value a simple gesture over compartments.
- Trade-off
- Organisation and security depend more on how you pack; test the base and how exposed the contents feel.
- Boutique test
- Set the loaded bag down, pick it up one-handed and check whether small items remain accessible.
Pre-owned transaction check
Describe the transaction, not the logo. The result shows where the file is weak; it never authenticates the object.

Most asked questions
What is the difference between a Birkin and a Kelly?
The Birkin has two handles and a more open, everyday format; the Kelly has one handle, a closed flap and, in many sizes, a shoulder strap with a more structured silhouette.
Which Hermès bag works as a first purchase?
Consider Birkin or Picotin for everyday volume, Kelly for a formal profile, and Constance or Evelyne for crossbody use. Test size, leather and weight together.
How should an Hermès bag be authenticated?
No single stamp or code is enough. Use independent expert review of shape, stitching, leather, hardware, date marks, provenance and seller history.
Choose a use before an icon
Birkin, Kelly, Constance, Evelyne, Picotin and Garden Party serve different habits. The matcher compares carry, access, structure and load, then explains three possible directions. Its percentage measures fit with those four choices only: it is not a model ranking or a prediction of value, availability or universal comfort.
Six lines, six visible trade-offs
Birkin prioritises capacity and hand carry; Kelly adds an architectural flap and, on relevant versions, a strap; Constance reduces the load to free the hands. Evelyne supports softer mobile use, Picotin simplifies access in a bucket form, and Garden Party provides a restrained tote. Exact size, material and version can change every conclusion.

Test a loaded bag, not only a mirror image
Bring or reproduce the phone, wallet, glasses, keys and papers you actually carry. Open and close one-handed, walk for ten minutes, sit down and try the bag over a jacket. Check weight, bounce, friction, content exposure and phone access. A photograph cannot reveal loaded weight, strap length or comfort.
Official availability without allocation myths
Hermès says its leather goods are sold in its stores or on Hermes.com, while Kelly, Birkin and Constance are sold exclusively in stores. Stock changes and each store selects its assortment. An appointment, purchase history or intermediary’s promise therefore never guarantees a specific model, size, material or colour.
Authentication: the official boundary matters
Hermès states that only a purchase from Hermes.com, an Hermès store or an authorised distributor guarantees authenticity, and that it cannot guarantee or verify an item bought outside an official point of sale. An original invoice is issued for official purchases, but an isolated invoice, stamp, number, box or photograph can be misused or copied.
Resale: assess the transaction before the detail
Identify the seller, whether they act professionally or privately, their address, payment route, description, return rights and chain of ownership. Require clear images of the whole object, wear areas and every claimed inclusion, then preserve the listing and messages. An implausibly low price, artificial urgency or refusal of evidence is a reason to stop before payment.
A photo file that makes examination possible
Request front, back, sides, base, interior, handles, strap, closure, hardware, visible markings and damage. Add dimensions, claimed weight, provenance, an invoice with sensitive data masked, repairs and the packaging actually included. These views certify nothing; they only give a platform, examiner or dispute process a coherent file.
After doubt: preserve evidence, then act
Do not rush to use or repair the item. Save the listing, payment, parcel, shipping label and dated photographs. Rights differ between a professional and private seller; withdrawal rights do not automatically apply to person-to-person sales. Use the Luxury Authenticity & Recovery Lab to order platform, seller, SignalConso or other routes without treating FRA9 as a certificate.
Frequently asked questions
Will Hermès authenticate a pre-owned bag?
Hermès says it cannot guarantee or verify an item bought outside its official network. A third-party examination remains an opinion; no isolated photo or code replaces defensible provenance.
Is a serial, stamp or invoice enough?
No. A number, stamp, box, card, invoice or photograph can be copied or separated from the item. Assess the object and transaction together.
Are Birkin, Kelly or Constance sold online?
Hermès states that Kelly, Birkin and Constance are sold exclusively in its stores. Always check current policy and availability on the official site.
What should I check before a resale payment?
Verify seller identity and status, protected payment, returns, provenance and a complete photo file; stop if coherent evidence is refused.
Does the FRA9 score prove a bag is genuine?
No. The model score measures use-fit and the transaction score flags documentary risk. Neither is authentication.
