The 16:00 bulletin expands Thursday’s yellow heat warning to six départements

Météo-France’s accessible map issued at 16:00 Paris time on Wednesday 2 September 2026 names no département at yellow, orange or red for Wednesday. Ardèche, Aude, Drôme, Gard, Hérault and Pyrénées-Orientales are at yellow for heat on Thursday 3 September. None is orange or red at this checkpoint. The expansion from two to six départements since the 06:00 bulletin is the material change behind this update.

02

Local highs of 34–36°C are forecast in the south-east

The national bulletin forecasts 20–24°C near the Channel coast, 24–28°C across the rest of northern France and near the Atlantic, 29–33°C in the south and local highs of 34–36°C in the south-east. The Mediterranean coast may start the day at 19–25°C. A high town forecast and a département warning colour are different signals, so check both before making plans.

03

Heat is expected to spread on Thursday and Friday

Météo-France forecasts 35–37°C in Languedoc-Roussillon and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur on Thursday 3 September, with 31–34°C in the south-west. Temperatures should rise across a large part of southern France on Friday and some readings could be unprecedented for September. The north-west remains cloudier with occasional light rain, so one national average cannot describe Lille, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Lyon, Marseille and Nice alike.

04

Local highs of 38–40°C are possible in Languedoc on Saturday

The outlook published on 2 September keeps intense heat in Languedoc on Saturday 5 September, with local peaks of 38–40°C. On Sunday, strong heat could become widespread from Occitanie through the Lyon area to Provence, while locally thundery showers remain possible in the west and over higher ground. A fall is expected from Monday, followed by possible Atlantic systems from Tuesday, but the end of the episode still requires confirmation.

05

Heat vigilance, very hot weather and a heatwave are not identical

Vigilance is a département-level danger and behaviour system. A 35°C forecast does not automatically trigger orange because duration, night-time temperatures, local vulnerability and territorial thresholds also matter. Thursday’s yellow heat warning in six départements calls for attention; it should neither be dismissed as ordinary summer weather nor misreported as an orange alert.

06

Travel and outdoor activity require a local decision

Before a hike, beach visit, work site, rail journey or drive, check the municipality, timing and any local restrictions. Move physical effort to cooler hours, carry extra water, plan shade and an indoor alternative, and never leave a person or animal in a vehicle. In the Calanques and Mediterranean uplands, wildfire risk and official access are separate checks from heat vigilance.

07

Older people, children, patients and exposed workers

Heat can quickly worsen dehydration, chronic illness or the effects of certain medicines. Contact isolated people regularly, keep homes as cool as possible, drink before intense thirst and seek professional advice for medication or unusual symptoms. Employers and outdoor workers should adapt organisation to the actual risk. For a serious medical emergency in France, call 15 or 112.

08

The next regular checkpoint is 06:00 on 3 September

Reopen the Météo-France map from 06:00 Paris time on Thursday 3 September. Check the publication date and time first, then the day covered and the hazard attached to each département. An extra bulletin may appear if conditions require it. FRA9 updates this same canonical file when warning levels, places, timing or practical consequences change; every bulletin does not need a new URL.
