Most asked questions

What is France’s minimum wage in 2026?

From 1 January 2026 it is €12.02 gross per hour, €1,823.03 gross per month for 35 hours and an indicative €1,443.11 net. Mayotte has a separate amount.

How do you convert French gross pay to net?

Employee social contributions are removed from gross pay to reach net, then tax withholding produces net after tax. Use the official 2026 URSSAF simulator because personal and contract variables matter.

What is the average salary in France?

INSEE’s January 2026 release gives the latest private-sector average as €2,730 net per month in 2024 full-time-equivalent terms. It is a historical statistic, not a 2026 job-offer estimate.

Is every offer above SMIC lawful?

Not necessarily. A higher collective-agreement minimum for the grade or coefficient takes precedence, so the classification must be checked separately.

Is annual gross pay divided by 12 or 13?

There is no universal rule. Check payment count, whether a thirteenth month is guaranteed, variable bonus and overtime treatment in the contract.

01

France’s official 2026 minimum wage

From 1 January 2026 the gross hourly SMIC is €12.02, the gross monthly amount for a 35-hour full-time job is €1,823.03 and the indicative monthly net amount is €1,443.11 in mainland France and most overseas departments and collectivities. Actual net pay can vary with sector-specific deductions. Mayotte has a separate threshold: €9.33 gross per hour and €1,415.05 gross per month. Do not use a 2025 table or an undated converter for a 2026 offer.

02

Gross, net and net after tax are different

French job offers and contracts normally state gross pay. Employee social contributions are removed to reach net pay, then income-tax withholding produces net after tax. The tax rate depends on the household; a neutral rate may apply initially. A fixed gross-to-net percentage is therefore unreliable. Use the official URSSAF simulator updated for 2026 and specify fixed-term status, management status, overtime, part-time work, meal vouchers, benefits and the personal withholding rate rather than relying on a generic calculator.

03

How to read average and median pay

INSEE’s latest aggregate release, published in January 2026, puts 2024 private-sector average net monthly pay at €2,730 in full-time equivalent terms. Its distribution table gives a 2023 private-sector median of €2,180 net: half earned less and half more. The reference years differ and neither number predicts a 2026 job offer. Reject comparisons that omit the year, sector, population and full-time-equivalent definition behind a claimed ‘average salary in France’.

04

Official pay snapshot by occupational group

INSEE’s 2024 private-sector full-time-equivalent net monthly averages are €4,630 for managers, €2,630 for intermediate occupations, €1,940 for employees and €2,050 for manual workers. These are broad categories rather than job rates, and they combine seniority, expertise, company size, bonuses and regions. The latest aggregate public-sector average is for 2023 and stands at €2,650 net. Compare a specific profession with current vacancies and the relevant collective-agreement classification.

05

SMIC or the collective-agreement minimum?

An employer cannot look only at the legal SMIC. If the sector’s collective agreement sets a higher minimum for the grade, level or coefficient, the most favourable floor must be paid; a company agreement can improve it again. Ask for the agreement name or identifier, job classification, coefficient and working time if the advert omits them. The official Digital Labour Code provides personalised minimum checks for the 50 main agreements. An offer above SMIC can still be too low for its actual classification.

06

Comparing monthly, annual and thirteen-payment offers

Annual gross packages are common in France. Establish whether fixed annual pay is divided into 12 or 13 payments, whether a variable bonus is guaranteed, and how overtime or RTT days are treated. Meal vouchers, transport contributions, profit-sharing, employee savings, remote-work allowances, health cover and a company car should not be hidden inside base salary. Compare offers on the same lines: fixed gross pay, guaranteed and target bonus, payment count, weekly hours, leave and RTT, location and unavoidable costs.

07

Internships, apprenticeships and part-time work

In 2026 a student internship exceeding 308 hours in the same academic year uses a minimum gratification of €4.50 per hour, not the employee SMIC; a collective agreement may improve it. Apprenticeship and professional-training contracts use age-, year- and programme-dependent percentages of SMIC. Part-time monthly pay falls with contracted hours while the hourly floor remains protected. Do not compare an internship gratification, an apprentice schedule and a normal full-time employee net salary as if they were identical.

08

Seven checks for a foreign worker

Even when pay looks reasonable, obtain the employer name and SIRET, contract type, workplace, weekly hours, gross base, collective-agreement grade and probation period in writing. Work authorisation or a long-stay visa is a separate decision from salary calculation; a tourist short stay is not general work permission. Qualification recognition, regulated-profession access and language requirements may also apply. Never pay a personal account for a guaranteed job or permit, and verify the contract and immigration route through separate official channels.

09

A practical salary-calculation sequence

First confirm whether the advertised amount is monthly or annual and gross or net. Record weekly hours, 12-versus-13 payments, guaranteed bonus and collective-agreement classification. Convert gross to net in the URSSAF simulator, add the personal withholding rate, then test the result against realistic rent, transport and compulsory costs for the city. Finally compare like-for-like vacancies in the same region and seniority band. This prevents a high annual headline from hiding long hours or non-guaranteed variable pay.
