Hours, entrances and arriving without a car
The park is free and the City’s practical page lists eight entrances. From 15 April to 14 October, general opening hours are 06:30–22:30, with entry ending 15 minutes before closing. Porte des Enfants du Rhône creates the most dramatic arrival, opening directly towards the lake. Tête-d’Or, Duquesne and Boulevard-des-Belges entrances can replace the northern gates; recheck the TCL journey planner and lyon.fr alert on the day.
1856–1857: why Lyon created the park
The City acquired the Tête d’Or land in 1856, when the estate was larger than today’s landscaped footprint. Prefect Claude-Marius Vaïsse wanted a major modern public space for Lyon; landscape designers Denis and Eugène Bühler shaped an English-style garden that opened in 1857 while some work continued. Curving paths, controlled views and a lake formed from an old arm of the Rhône still create the sense of countryside inside the metropolis.
105 hectares around a 16-hectare lake
The current landscaped park covers about 105 hectares and the lake occupies 16. Begin at the water, follow one bank towards Île du Souvenir and return across the major lawns to understand the plan before entering the collections. Figures of 105 and 117 hectares are not necessarily contradictory: the first describes today’s park, while the second refers to historically acquired land before areas were removed to improve Rhône flood defences.
Botanical garden, great greenhouses and zoo
The botanical collections and monumental greenhouses make this more than a city walk. The municipal page gives 09:00–16:30 for the great greenhouses. The free zoo, including the African Plain and Asian Forests, keeps separate hours and is normally closed on Tuesdays; its seasonal day ends earlier than the park’s. Check the zoo, greenhouses and any storm-secured zones separately before promising children that everything will be open.
The best two-hour or half-day route
For two hours, link Porte des Enfants du Rhône, the lake, Île du Souvenir, great greenhouses and one rose garden. With half a day, add the botanical garden, African Plain, Asian Forests and a lawn break. Boats, the miniature railway, mini-golf and other leisure facilities are seasonal or paid, so treat them as optional rather than guaranteed parts of the visit.
Families, running, cycling and accessibility
The long avenues suit walking, running and family outings, although the lakeside and main gates become busy. Toilets have been redesigned for accessibility and adapted greenhouse visits can be arranged, while detours around the northern gates may lengthen a route. Keep dogs, bicycles and other activities to permitted areas, and give service vehicles space to work around weakened sections.
The check to make before leaving
The City closes the park when violent winds exceed 70 km/h and can isolate individual areas after a storm. The alert banner on lyon.fr therefore takes priority over saved opening hours, an old map or a social post. On 2 September no date had been given for reopening the northern gates: check again that day, choose a backup entrance and be ready to shorten the walk while safety work continues.
