History of the monument
The site preserves the memory of an early episcopal residence reshaped in Carolingian, Gothic and Classical periods. Before coronation in the neighbouring cathedral, kings stayed and prepared here, returning for the banquet. The palace burned during the 1914 bombardment, was restored after the Second World War and opened as a museum of cathedral fabric and coronations.
How to read the architecture
The T-shaped plan explains the name Tau. Palatine chapel, lower hall, great banquet hall and Classical decoration belong to different phases. Collections bring together cathedral sculpture, tapestries, metalwork and coronation objects; these are not palace accessories but material evidence of a political and religious ritual.
Plans, archives and documents
Historic plans, archiepiscopal accounts, coronation ordines, treasury inventories, photographs of the 1914 fire and reconstruction files connect spaces and ceremonies. The Holy Ampulla, talisman attributed to Charlemagne and original sculpture require precise labels on provenance and conservation. The most coherent route
Do not plan the Palace of Tau as an open museum: works begun in 2023 continue and Reims Tourism currently gives 2027 as the reopening target. Read its exterior from the cathedral’s south side and combine cathedral, Saint-Remi and coronation history during closure. After reopening, prioritise chapel, Tau hall, cathedral sculpture and treasury; confirm the exact date and tickets only officially.
