The Middle Ages inside a multi-period site
The museum brings together the northern Gallo-Roman baths, the late-fifteenth-century Hôtel de Cluny and a contemporary presentation of the collections. This layering is a major strength: architecture is not neutral scenery, but evidence to read alongside the objects.
Lady and the Unicorn beyond one photograph
The six tapestries made around 1500 connect five senses with a more enigmatic sixth scene. First read the whole group, then study gestures, animals, plants and emblems. The museum provides the reference record; avoid turning a popular interpretation into historical certainty.

Begin with the relationship between the ancient baths and medieval mansion, continue through sculpture, stained glass, metalwork or everyday objects, then finish with the tapestries. With two hours, add the chapel and return to one material rather than merely accumulating display cases.
Hours and weekly closure
The museum lists opening from 9:30 am to 6:15 pm every day except Monday. The ticket desk closes at 5:30 pm and galleries begin clearing at 5:45 pm. Annual closures and exceptional adjustments exist, so check the practical page for the exact date of the visit.
Tickets and booking rhythm
The official page shows the current price and any time slots; use it instead of a figure copied from an old guide. Advance booking is sensible during holidays or an exhibition, but does not promise instant access. Free-entry categories require the corresponding evidence.
Entrance and accessibility in the Latin Quarter
Public entrance is at 28 rue Du Sommerard. The building mixes ancient remains, a historic mansion and recent additions, so circulation may differ from a uniform modern gallery. Read the accessibility information, travel light and keep time for security.
Cluny, Sainte-Chapelle and the Left Bank
Cluny fits a medieval day with Sainte-Chapelle, Notre-Dame and the Latin Quarter streets. Do not lock in three tightly spaced tickets: choose one timed monument, keep Cluny as the calm main visit, and verify walking and security time that morning.
The limits of a specialist museum
Cluny illuminates European medieval art powerfully, but cannot summarise the whole Middle Ages or every culture in the period. FRA9 measures fit for a visit; it does not create an art hierarchy, guarantee that an object is displayed or replace museum records.
