Luxembourg Gardens: history, statues and walk
From Marie de’ Medici’s palace to the Senate garden: basin, statues, orchard and historical walk.
From Marie de’ Medici’s palace to the Senate garden: basin, statues, orchard and historical walk.
History of the monument
Marie de’ Medici acquired the estate in the early seventeenth century and commissioned a palace recalling Florence. The garden changed with regimes, urban works and public use; since the nineteenth century it has been administered by the Senate in Luxembourg Palace.
How to read the architecture
A formal French axis and great basin occupy the centre; an English garden, Medici Fountain, orchard, apiary and statue series fill the edges. Formal symmetry and everyday Paris chairs share one landscape.

Plans, archives and documents
Senate plans, statue inventories and historic photographs show a garden never frozen in one period. The Statue of Liberty model and Queens of France series are particularly legible documentary stops.
The most coherent route
Enter from Saint-Sulpice, then follow Medici Fountain, palace façade, great basin, queens and orchard. Combine with Panthéon and the Latin Quarter; gates follow seasonal and security schedules.
Photography without losing the visit
Begin with a broad view that places the monument on its urban axis, then select two architectural or decorative details. Respect interior restrictions, worship and residents. A useful photograph also records scale, material and the relationship to the surrounding district.
Hours, tickets and access
Hours, security, free or paid access and temporary closures vary with ceremonies, weather, works and season. Check the official source below that morning, buy only from authorised ticketing and allow time for controls.
What to notice before leaving
Return to the façade or starting viewpoint after the interior: chronology, materials and symbols will now read more clearly. Use the related sites below to build a local route rather than crossing Paris between timed reservations.
