History of the monument
Louis XIV founded the Royal Invalides in 1670 to house and care for old or wounded soldiers. The complex joined welfare, discipline and royal representation. Napoleon’s remains and the developing army museum strengthened its memorial function in the nineteenth century.
How to read the architecture
Bruant’s great courtyard plan and Hardouin-Mansart’s gilded royal church combine two architectural languages. Soldiers’ church Saint-Louis and the Dome church share an axis but served different communities.
Plans, archives and documents
The 1670 foundation decree, hospital registers, military standards, records of the 1840 funeral and Visconti’s tomb design document the shift from social institution to national pantheon.
The most coherent route
Approach from the esplanade to align façade and dome; continue through Cour d’Honneur, Saint-Louis, selected museum galleries and the tomb beneath the Dome. Choose a historical period rather than attempting every military collection.
