History of the monument
The Conciergerie preserves the medieval core of the Capetian palace before royal residence shifted to the Louvre. Justice and prison functions then expanded. During the Revolution it housed the Revolutionary Tribunal and imprisoned Marie Antoinette before execution.
How to read the architecture
The Hall of the Men-at-Arms is a vast four-aisled Gothic space on heavy piers; kitchen towers and vaulted lower rooms reveal palace service organisation. Revolutionary prison reconstructions form a later layer.
Plans, archives and documents
Royal accounts, court registers, prisoner lists and Marie Antoinette’s trial papers separate the site from romantic prison legend. Digital interpretation helps, but distinguish original, reconstructed and lost spaces.
The most coherent route
Use a timed pairing with Sainte-Chapelle. Visit the great halls and Revolution section first, then allow for security before Sainte-Chapelle; Notre-Dame’s exterior completes the half day.
