History of the monument
Rouen’s cathedral complex grew over earlier sanctuaries; the present building took shape from the twelfth century through fires, storms, extensions and conservation. Religious centre of ducal Normandy, it preserves memories of Rollo and Richard the Lionheart. Bombing in 1944 severely damaged the monument, and its reconstruction is part of the visible history.
How to read the architecture
The west front is a complex screen of portals, pinnacles and Flamboyant additions; Monet painted changing light rather than a fixed elevation. Saint-Romain Tower, Butter Tower and the lantern tower crowned by a nineteenth-century 151-metre cast-iron spire belong to different campaigns. Inside, glass, stalls, ducal tombs and chapels expose the chronology.
