History of the monument
Tradition locates early Christian tombs here; John Cassian founded a monastery in the fifth century. Destroyed and rebuilt, it revived in the Middle Ages and gained its fortified fourteenth-century form under Guillaume de Grimoard, later Pope Urban V.
