French perfume: from Grasse to the bottle
How perfume is built, what concentration means and how to choose beyond branding or the first spray.
How perfume is built, what concentration means and how to choose beyond branding or the first spray.
Why Grasse matters
Grasse connects flower growing, extraction, composition and the transmission of craft. It is not the only home of French perfume, but it remains a living memory of the industry. Workshops and the museum help explain the product before the marketing.
Notes, accords and development
Top notes appear quickly, the heart shapes character and the base supports longevity, though the pyramid is only a simplification. Test on skin and wait several hours because temperature, skin and environment change perception. A scent that works on paper may tell a different story on you.

Concentration and wear
Cologne, Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum and extrait indicate concentration families, not a universal longevity promise. Formula, materials, diffusion and skin matter just as much. More concentrated is not always more pleasant or more suitable for daytime.
Choosing in store
Limit yourself to three or four trials, smell fresh air rather than coffee and take a break. Ask for a sample before buying a large bottle. Note time, development and skin reaction; the right scent proves itself after leaving the counter.
Avoid counterfeit perfume
Buy from official channels or an identifiable retailer, checking reference, batch, packaging and invoice without treating one detail as absolute proof. An abnormally low price, vague origin or pushy seller should stop the purchase. Fake perfume may also pose skin and health risks.
