When couture became a house
In the nineteenth century, Paris transformed the relationship between couturier, client and model. Charles Frederick Worth embodies the move towards an identifiable house, presented collections and designer authority. Fashion became craft, spectacle and industry at once.
Silhouettes and society
Corsets, waistlines, length and movement reveal the body’s social role. Wars, women’s work, sport and new leisure changed clothing as much as designers did. Reading a dress also means reading the era that made it possible.
Ready-to-wear changes scale
Ready-to-wear widened the public, accelerated seasons and connected creativity, industry and distribution. Paris did not lose couture; it added another system. Department stores, press and photography became style-makers.
Twentieth-century ruptures
Poiret freed the line, Chanel simplified, Vionnet mastered the bias cut, Dior rebuilt silhouette and Saint Laurent conversed with art and street. This is not a podium of isolated geniuses: ateliers, premières, models, textiles and clients shaped each shift.
Where to see fashion in Paris
Palais Galliera, the Musée des Arts décoratifs, house archives, temporary exhibitions and specialist libraries offer complementary perspectives. Check exhibitions before travelling because fragile textiles require rotation and not every collection is permanently displayed.
