The position on 31 August 2026

CROUS says 155,000 students had reserved accommodation for the 1 September intake, while demand was 5% higher than in 2025. Missing the first allocation is not the end of the search: cancellations and late vacancies still appear, while private and temporary options move fastest when the application file is already complete.

Restart the search in the right order

Check trouverunlogement.lescrous.fr regularly, then expand to Lokaviz, approved student residences, the institution’s housing office and verified flatshares. If classes are about to begin, secure a short and cancellable option first rather than signing a suspicious remote lease under pressure.

03

Get Visale before signing

The Visale guarantee can act as guarantor for many students and apprentices under 30, subject to eligibility. Apply before signing the lease; a student Visale certificate remains valid for six months. Limits vary by location, rent and resources, so use the official simulator rather than a figure copied from a listing.

04

A complete file, never original documents

Prepare identification, admission or enrolment evidence, residence status, proof of resources, a Visale certificate or guarantor documents and bank details where available. Share watermarked copies, never hand over an original passport and never pay merely for the right to view a property.

05

APL, ALS or ALF: apply after moving in

Housing benefit is requested online after moving in. It is not retroactive and the first payment generally arrives two months after the application, so do not treat it as day-one cash. Each flatmate applies separately; also check whether the student’s claim changes family benefits paid to parents.

06

The real first-month budget

Add the first rent, deposit, home insurance, any agency fee, electricity or internet setup and moving costs. Ask for a receipt for every payment. Future assistance does not replace the deposit or the cash buffer needed for the opening weeks.

07

Warning signs of a fake listing

Do not transfer money before checking the address, landlord identity, lease and viewing conditions. Reverse-search the photos and address, be wary of an owner supposedly abroad and require a condition report when keys are handed over. A price far below the neighbourhood rate calls for more checks, not less.
