Rail is the simplest spine
TER regional trains directly link Nice-Ville, Antibes and Cannes along the coast. Exact journey time and frequency change with the hour, engineering work and season, so use the live timetable rather than an old screenshot. At peak periods, arrive early and avoid a tight flight connection.
From Nice airport
Cannes is 27 km from Nice Côte d’Azur Airport. Cannes Tourism lists a direct motorway shuttle roughly every 30 minutes, taking about 45 minutes; recheck fares and times before travel. The rail alternative uses Nice-Saint-Augustin station near the airport.
Where should you base yourself?
Choose Nice for the airport, museums, full-scale city life and trips towards Menton or Monaco. Choose Cannes for sandy beaches, the Lérins Islands, congresses and a compact centre. Antibes is the compromise: old town, port, beaches and a central position on the TER line.
A Cannes day trip from Nice
Take a morning train, begin at Forville Market and Le Suquet, descend to the Old Port, then connect the Palais and Croisette. Add an island only with a long day and workable boat times. Keep a return buffer after an event.
Three days without a car
Day 1: Nice, Old Nice, Castle Hill and the Promenade. Day 2: Antibes, Provençal market, ramparts and the cape if weather allows. Day 3: Cannes, Le Suquet, Palais, Croisette or Lérins. This triangle gives more time to the coast than changing hotel every day.
Festival crowds, luggage and the last train
During the Cannes Festival and major congresses, trains, platforms and accommodation fill quickly. Travel light, keep valuables in front of you and check the last return before the screening. For an early flight, sleeping in Nice or near the airport is often safer.
